AI Doesn’t Make Ideas More Valuable. It Makes Insight More Valuable.

before AI after AI

The above image has been widely shared on X. It argues that AI has flipped the bottleneck.

Before AI, ideas were relatively abundant, but execution capacity was scarce; therefore, execution was the bottleneck. After AI execution becomes dramatically easier and cheaper. Therefore, ideas become the bottleneck.

This is why so many people say things like: “In the age of AI, execution is cheap, and ideas are everything.”

There is some truth to that because a single person today can: Write software, create marketing campaigns, generate designs, conduct research, build prototypes, and launch products at a scale that previously required teams. So the execution side of the equation has unquestionably expanded.

But, there’s something wrong with the image: it assumes that all ideas are equally valuable.

They’re not. The real bottleneck isn’t ideas. It’s insight.

Most ideas are derivatives of what already exists. Do we really need another social media scheduling app? AI note-taking app? Another habit tracker? Another chatbot wrapper?

Come on, we can do better.

The world is already overflowing with ideas. What is scarce is understanding, judgment, taste, customer empathy, and problem selection. In other words: The bottleneck isn’t generating ideas. It’s identifying which ideas matter.

That’s why innovation remains hard. AI can help you execute. It can’t tell you which problems are worth solving. That’s up to us. We’re the driver.

With that said, the winners won’t necessarily be the people with the most ideas. The winners will be the people who:

  • Identify important problems.
  • Generate high-quality insights.
  • Run lots of experiments to validate.
  • Use AI to accelerate execution.

So yes, as AI makes execution more abundant. Insight becomes more valuable.

Bottom line: AI doesn’t make ideas more valuable. It makes good judgment more valuable. Ideas matter. But, ideas without insight are just that: ideas.
