Is AI Causing Job Losses?

AI is already snatching up jobs left and right. The latest big tech company to automate jobs is Google. According to a new report by The Information, Google is looking to reassign or let go of sales workers whose jobs were automated by the company’s new AI tools.

Specifically, this affects advertising sales jobs. The news made some noise because it’s Google.

Are more job losses on the way because of AI?

A new report has shined some light on whether AI is causing job losses, and what this means going forward – and it’s not as straightforward as it may seem. According to a recent report of 750 business leaders using AI from ResumeBuilder, 37% say the technology replaced workers in 2023. Meanwhile, 44% report that there will be layoffs in 2024 resulting from AI efficiency.“

However, the research may not accurately reflect the broader business landscape.

Without the nuance behind the prediction numbers, experts have said the statistics marking and predicting AI-induced layoffs reflect fear more than reality. “There are still so many traditional organizations and small businesses that do not embrace technology the way that some of the larger companies do,” Said Julia Toothacre, one of the report’s publishers.

In addition, Asana’s State of AI at Work 2023 report, employees say that 29% of their work tasks are replaceable by AI. However, Asana is a proponent of “human-centered AI,” which seeks to enhance human abilities and collaboration, not replace people outright.

With that said AI is already snatching up jobs left and right — and according to a study by the McKinsey Global Institute, that trend could accelerate faster than anybody expected. Goldman Sachs found in its research report earlier this year that roughly 300 million jobs could soon be lost due to AI.

Is losing your job to AI inevitable?

No!

You’re responsible for your development, and part of your job is to keep developing new skills. If you learned some software five years ago, that’s not enough. You’ve got to learn new software today. In other words, stay on top of AI to stop it from getting on top of you!

Bottom line: In most cases, AI won’t take your job; a person using AI will.
