Will AI Make CEOs Obsolete?

Fast Company has an interesting question “Will AI make CEOs obsolete?“. A survey of CEOs found that 49% said “most” or “all” of their work should be replaced by artificial intelligence. The report, produced by online learning company edX, doesn’t directly answer the question but is worth considering.

Firstly, the role of a CEO is multifaceted. It isn’t just about making data-driven decisions but involves leadership, vision-casting, building culture, managing relationships with stakeholders, and often acting as the public face of the organization. While certain elements of these responsibilities can be augmented with AI, significant portions are deeply human-centric.

Will AI Make CEOs Obsolete?

The answer is likely no, at least not in the foreseeable future. AI will act as a tool to augment the CEO’s capabilities, allowing them to make better-informed decisions, predict trends, and streamline operations. However, the deeply human aspects of the CEO role, such as leadership, vision, relationship management, and ethical decision-making, cannot be fully replicated by AI.

That said, the role of the CEO might evolve. CEOs of the future will likely need to be adept at understanding and leveraging technology, including AI. They will need to work in tandem with AI, using it as a powerful tool, but also recognizing its limitations and ensuring the human aspects of leadership remain front and center.

Remember, AI won’t replace people but a person using AI will.
