MJ vs MJ

What’s your favorite quote about innovation and why?

MJ vs MJ

I don’t have just one, but a few. My favorite quotes about innovation come from people who are not in the business of innovation. They are not Captains of Industry. What they are, is cultural icons. Both these people are my heroes, and share the same two initials: MJ

  • “Study the greats, and become greater.” – Michael Jackson
  • “I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” – Michael Jordan

I’ve never looked up to people who do things for money. I look up to people who genuinely love what they do, and who want and need to be the best at what they do. That is the mindset. And sometimes, these people become the best for the world because of it.

Here’s another quote I found recently:

  • “The question is not ‘how do we become the best in the world?’ but ‘how do we become the best for the world?'” – Uffe Albaek, Founder, The Kaos Pilots

Your turn, what are your favorite quotes about innovation and why?

  • “everybody has a game plan until they get punched in the face” Mike Tyson. Be prepared for failure. How will you respond?

On a side note, one of my favorite tools online is the “Share as Image” feature for Pinterest that lets you pin quotes from online sources. Here is the growing collection I keep for myself. It is a handy source to fall back on when trying to remember good quotes I want to remember.

    • Good one Jason @jawbrain! And thanks for the pointer. I didn’t know Pinterest had a “share as image” function, comes in handy.

    Hi Jorge – I like Peter Drucker’s quote on marketing and innovation;

“Because the purpose of business is to create a customer, the business enterprise has two -and only two -basic functions: marketing and innovation. Marketing and innovation produce results; all the rest are costs. Marketing is the distinguishing, unique function of the business.”

    • Hi Kevin @innovationfixer, that is a classic. It is amazing how Mr. Drucker’s thoughts still resonate to this day.

  • “If I have seen further than other men it’s because I have stood on the shoulders of giants”

This packs so much truth into such few words. I have nothing more to say.
    Kudos to you @jorgebarba:disqus

    • Hi Ivan,

That’s a good one and very true. Similar to the one I used too. Thanks for sharing.
