Indeed. Scrappy startups are known for acting with speed and conviction, while established organizations are slow and risk averse. When implemented well, speed and surprise are the ultimate equalizers. To achieve surprise, you need an unexpected idea first. Second, you need to have the ability to execute that idea. Third, you need to decide when and how to execute the idea.

It is at the moment of making the decision where most established organizations fail. Why? Because most large organizations don’t empower their employees to make decisions.

I just came across this video of how the Nordstrom Innovation Lab created, tested and built an iPad app in just one week with the intent of enhancing the eye wear buying experience. I thought I’d share this with you as a follow up post to the three part series I wrote on how to leave small thinking behind.

Though the video was posted almost three years ago, it is still quite relevant for rapid prototyping towards innovation.

How to get your ideas heard

We all have different creative styles, we all get our ideas differently. But what will set you apart is how you communicate them, that means not just verbal communication but visual presentation.

This isn’t a new idea, but in a world where people still like to sit down and discuss things before doing them, taking the initiative and coming up with a mock-up or prototype will go a long way in getting people to hear and experience your pitch.

I read this article in fortune magazine where it states that you should let your boss take the credit for your ideas but not your peers. But there’s a point not examined that’s getting your ideas heard first.
