One of the biggest challenges in the Next Economy is upskilling people. And as I’ve mentioned before, I believe people should be responsible for their own upskilling instead of depending on their employers for that.
Four or five years ago a few collaborators and I conducted an online hackathon where we set out to rethink education. A few projects were born from that hackathon, of which one still exists. That whole experience taught us that it’s very hard for people to let go of the idea that one should educate oneself, and that people are just habituated to be educated from the top down.
There is debate about what the future of education looks like and how we’ll get there. What isn’t debatable is the number of challenges we face in the Next Economy; primarily reskilling. This means people will have to develop new skills, specifically ones that computing can’t take over, to thrive.
Artificial intelligence, a powerful emerging technology sweeping business and society will drive the Next Economy and chatbots, aided by powerful natural language processors, are beginnig to make an impact across various industries; including education.
While in college I was the guy that jumped from one topic to another. I wanted to learn what I wanted, when I wanted at my own pace. So, if I wanted to jump into a class from the electronics major, that’s what I did.
Because the way education was and is designed didn’t work for me; it moves too slow, I felt constrained and categorized. If the point of education is to give you facts to memorize by a teacher in front of a blackboard, there has to be a better way and I believed I could learn better and faster on my own. Sure you’d definitely need the help of clep study guides if you were to pass, but you simply cannot depend on one book to guide you.
