How Michael Jordan influenced me
Michael Jordan, “The Greates Ever” will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in September.
I remember watching Michael Jordan for the first time when I was 15 years old, watching the Bulls lose against the Orlando Magic in the playoffs when he had just come back from playing baseball. The hype of his comeback was in full force and I was taken by it.
Because of Michael Jordan I started studying and playing basketball. I became so obsessed that I started reading playbooks and more importantly I started to dig deep into Michael Jordan’s thinking.
I wanted to know what made him great. Why was he considered the “Greatest” to ever lace them up.
I was a 15 year old kid and had found a perfect role model to look up to.
10 ways Michael Jordan has influenced me
I found the following things to be key in his thinking and that have influenced me:
- On earning respect and being a leader:
Nothing of value comes without being earned. That’s why great leaders are those who lead by example first. You can’t demand respect because of a title or a position and expect people to follow. That might work for a little while, but in the long run people respond to what they see.
- On making your rise to the top easier and then being able to maintain your edge:

“I practice so hard because that makes the game easy for me.”
“I focus on the little things. Little things add up to big things.”
- On having the will to succeed:
“I can accept failure but I can’t accept not trying.”
- On accepting that some things happen for a reason. You have to move forward:
The Last Word hd “Only be accountable for what you can control.”
- On setting high expectations for yourself and being consistent on meeting them:
“My expectation was excellence each and every time I stepped on the court. Whether is was practice or game, I was there to win.”
- On thriving in pressure situations:
“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
- On being yourself everyday:
“Michael Jordan isn’t afraid of being Michael Jordan everyday. He never takes a day off.” – Bill Russell
“If others had a negative opinion about something I said or something I did, then that was their opinion. It wasn’t going to affect me.”
- On motivating yourself:
“It was the idea somebody might be sitting there who had never seen Michael Jordan play.”
Thanks Michael!
It all starts with a dream
Here’s one of my favorite leadership videos, worldwide CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi Kevin Roberts shares his vision for the company and gives Wharton students a primer on his unique leadership style when he visited the Wharton School as part of the Wharton Leadership Lecture series.
Here are the key points:
- Get to the future first.
- Be in the ideas business.
- Ideas are the currency of the future.
- The role of business is to make the world a better place for everyone.
- Ideas are emotion based. Emotions inspire action.
- Fail fast, learn fast, fix fast.
- Information and knowledge are tablestakers, insight and foresight win.
- And/And. No compromises, no balance. Develop the mindset of only doing things that you’re passionate about all the time.
- It all starts with a dream, not a mission statement.
- When given command, take charge and do what’s right.
- There are no limits, only possibilities.

On Being indispensable

A very Happy New Year to everyone. I’m looking forward to this coming year with lots of projects in the pipeline, new services, new ventures and a lot of fun.
So it’s the start of a new year and I want to share a piece of advice that works for me…be indispensable.

Being valuable makes you unique
I have a personal protocol I follow that I apply to myself and unto others…you either indispensable or your replaceable.
I don’t mention this freely to anybody but making a difference in people’s lives is very important to me (my company’s slogan is Think Impact). There is something that came up a few weeks ago while talking with clients (why we got into this conversation, I don’t know) that got me thinking about my protocol. I realized that one of the reasons that I’ve held on to the past is because I feel I didn’t make a difference in this person’s life (yes, I’m talking about someone I love dearly).
I know I’m obsessed with making a difference, I just can’t stand myself being irrelevant.
I’ve learned that being indispensable is like anything else, you have to cultivate it. Integrate it in every part of your life and make it part of your daily thinking. I’ve told people to start by asking simple questions as “How can I improve this?”, “How can I make this better?”, “How can I help this person be better at X?”.
Eden Log rip Here are 10 things I’ve learned on being indispensable:
- Be there. Don’t wait to be needed, anticipate.
- Follow the Golden Rule. Treat others as you’d like to be treated.
- Be original. What do you stand for?
- Respect. Respect yourself, respect others and you shall be respected.
- Bend and break rules. The status quo scares me, making it irrelevant fires me up.
- Give them something to remember. Who are you? What are you here for? Where are you going?
- Stay humble. Stay grounded and remember where you came from.
- Make others better. Empower people, share and become a source of power.
- Strive to be the best at what you do. Bring your A game everyday, set high expectations for yourself and don’t expect anything less than the best you have to offer.
- Be an example to follow. Lead by example, people respond to what they see. They don’t follow titles.

I posted this in this weeks innovation digest and thought it be a great idea to post it here also. This video is based on Gordon MacKenzie’s “Orbiting the Giant Hairball,” a book which offers some insights on how large and complex organizations can innovate.
I’m going to be showing this to clients for sure.

Great Career Advice comes in small packages

I was on Twitter a few hours ago and one of the tweets from David Meerman Scott was a link to Jonathan Fields new ebook The Fire Fly Manifesto. Just released today!
It’s packed with great career advice but more importantly life advice. Check out the Intro:
“Whether you flip burgers or swap derivatives, losing a job just plain sucks. I’m not here to tell you otherwise. Especially, when you were following the rules, you did everything right, you worked your ass off, you sacrificed what you really wanted to do for years or decades on the promise of a better life…and still got sacked or, worse, watched your entire company go down in flames.
What’s going on in the world and the economy right now is frightening. Nobody knows when the other shoe will drop, what it will look and feel like when it does, or if another shoe even exists. And, for many of the hundreds of thousands of folks who lost their jobs this year, the position you’ve lost simply doesn’t exist anymore…in any company. So, going back or making a lateral move isn’t an option.
But, I’ve got news for you…
What feels like the end of the the world to you now may, in fact, be the window you’ve dreamed of for decades.
How many of you have spent months or years secretly praying to win the lottery so you could stop doing what you were doing and finally do what you loved? How many of you have felt locked into a tired, life-sucking career by a suffocating marriage of golden or lead handcuffs, fear that you’d be judged or ridiculed for changing paths and a life-stifling lack of belief in your ability to make a living doing what you love?
Thing is, if that’s you…
The economy has just served you up a big, fat opportunity!
In fact, you may never get an opening like this again….”
It resonated with me because I’m a believer in working on things you’re passionate about. I believe that If you’re getting up because the alarm clock sounded then it means something is wrong. Get up because you have a purpose to make a difference and can’t wait to get started again!
Now is the time to make things happen, opportunities might not be clear to some, all I can say is that by the time this “crisis” is over life will be much different for those who challenged the status quo.
Dream, create, explore, imagine, pioneer. Do these words describe what you do? If not then you’re already irrelevant.
